Canal Latéral à la Marne:  Vitry-le-François to Châlons-en-Champagne

The last 29 kilometers and seven locks of the first half of Wanderlust’s 2021 cruising season went by quickly.  Between Vitry-le-François and Châlons-en-Champagne the channel of the Canal latéral à la Marne is broad, as Freycinet canals go, and there … Continue reading

Canal de la Marne au Rhin (Ouest):  Bignicourt-sur-Saulx to Vitry-le-François

In the morning we pushed Wanderlust off of the quay in Bignicourt.  We loitered in the still water a moment before moving the throttle forward and easing on down the canal.

Canal de la Marne au Rhin (Ouest):  Revigny-sur-Ornain to Bignicourt-sur-Saulx

The VNF working hard to clear weeds

The pair of Dutch-flagged boats that had arrived late and moored behind Wanderlust in Bar-le-Duc had followed us down the canal to Revigny-sur-Ornain where they again moored behind us late in the day.  This morning they left early, with a stated intent on taking the spaces at the short serviced quay in Pargny-sur-Saulx.

Canal de la Marne au Rhin (Ouest):  Bar-le-Duc to Revigny-sur-Ornain

After a quick provisioningtrip to Bar-le-Duc’s covered market Wanderlust continued down the Canal de la Marne au Rhin towards Vitry-le-François.  The weed was thick in several reaches but it didn’t present a problem for us this day.  Instead our day’s … Continue reading

Canal de la Marne au Rhin (Ouest):  Demange-aux-Eaux to Ligny-en-Barrois

After a quiet night in rural Demange-aux-Eaux, Wanderlust continued down the canal in the morning.  In my opinion, the first stages of the descent on the west side of the Mauvages Tunnel and Demange the most attractive portion of the … Continue reading

Canal de la Marne au Rhin (Ouest):  Void-Vacon to Demange-aux-Eaux

In the morning at neuf heures Wanderlust peeled off the side of C.A.R.I.B. III and departed Void-Vacon.  In front of her bow was a chain of 12 locks that would lift her to the last of the two summit pounds … Continue reading

Canal de la Marne au Rhin (Ouest):  Into the Void, Toul to Void-Vacon

By the time we moved Wanderlust out of the Port de France in Toul the rains had returned.  Being on a canal the precipitation made things uncomfortable at times, particularly in the locks.  But short of a biblical flood it … Continue reading

Moselle River and the Canal de la Marne au Rhin (Ouest):  Pompey to Toul

The next leg of our journey started as we pushed Wanderlust off of the pontoon in Pompey.  Angling her bow out into the current of the Moselle River, we continued on our journey.  A short distance upstream we reached l’écluse … Continue reading

The Canal de la Marne au Rhin (Est) and the Moselle River: Nancy to Pompey

Given our druthers we would have stayed longer in Nancy.  It’s a beautiful city with all that we want.  But we needed to get Wanderlust situated in a place where we could leave her for a month and a half … Continue reading
